Maryam Mirzakhani scholarships
The Ecole Doctorale Mathématique Hadamard (EDMH) allows students to prepare a doctorate in mathematics on the Paris-Saclay area, regardless of the field of mathematics or the institution of registration concerned (université Paris-Saclay or Institut Polytechnique de Paris). The FMJH is delighted to offer Maryam Mirzakhani PhD scholarships for female students of any nationality in order to encourage them preparing a PhD within the EDMH. Like the junior Maryam Mirzakhani prizes offered yearly by the FMJH, these scholarships commemorate the life and work of Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani (1977-2017), who became the first female mathematician to win the Fields Medal, in 2014.
These PhD scholarships are part of the Women in Mathematics program, which aims to address the underrepresentation of women in mathematics.
The scholarship covers the master’s years of the laureate as well as doctoral funding commitments with a monthly salary.
Terms and conditions
The scholarship contributes towards the tuition fees for the Master's and PhD programmes and provides a grant broken down as follows:
-
A master’s excellence scholarship (11000€/year) for 2 years or 1 year depending on whether the student plans to enroll in the first or the second year of the master’s degree.
-
A doctoral funding commitment for 3 years (a total minimum gross funding of approximately €82,800 over 3 years, following the rules established by the French ministry of higher education and research ).
What happens at the end of the master?
To continue receiving this funding, you must meet the academic requirements of the master's program in which you are enrolled and develop a thesis project with an EDMH thesis supervisor during the second year of the master's program. Once the master's degree has been validated, the EDMH council must approve the proposed thesis topic in order for you to receive additional funding to continue your doctoral studies.
How to apply?
To be considered for the studentship, all you have to do is submit your completed application online below by the January deadline which is specified for each annual call.
Eligibility
To be eligible you should intend to enroll for a Master's degree in "Mathematics and Applications" (M1 or M2) at the Université Paris-Saclay or the Institut Polytechnique de Paris and then prepare a PhD within EDMH. As such, at the time of application, you should be in the process of completing either a bachelor's degree or the first year of a master's degree (or equivalent), preferably in mathematics. The list of eligible courses appears in the drop-down menu of the online application form but you can also find it here.
Selection procedure
The award jury will make a preliminary selection among the applications. If you are selected at this stage, you will be interviewed by videoconference in English or French, depending on your preference.
