EDMH is particularly concerned about the future of its doctoral students. The main aim of the training courses offered and the various follow-up operations is to prepare them for professional integration, whatever the career prospects they envisage. After completing a thesis at EDMH, PhD students have a wide range of career prospects, both in France and abroad:
- In academia: lecturer or teacher-researcher in France and abroad
- In secondary education: in preparatory classes, PRAG, etc.
- In the corporate world: jobs in the private sector, from R&D departments of major corporations to start-ups, see the Companies section.
- In major public research organizations (CNRS, CEA, INRIA, INRA, DGA, etc.) and government agencies.
By signing the thesis charter, doctoral students undertake to provide EDMH, via the ADUM software, with their career history for the 5 years following their thesis defense.
Post-doc & ATER
Please note that if you want to do a post-doc in the academic year following your thesis (starting in October if you defend before September, or starting in January or February if you defend in December, for example), you may need to apply well in advance. This is often the case for the USA (typically before November of your third year of thesis) and for some foundations, including FMSP and FMJH.
Here are a few sites where post-doc positions are available:
- French site: Opération postes (the Opération poste site also lists positions for agrégés préparateurs, ATERs, etc.)
- see also the list of ATER positions officially published on the ALTAIR site of the GALAXIE site of the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research”.
- FMJH: International Post-Doc Program and Hadamard Readers
- FSMP
- IHES: Simons Foundation Fellowships
- CEMPI
- U.S. site: MathJobs (beware of deadlines in the U.S., which are often around November of the previous year)
- English site: jobs.ac.uk (see “Academic jobs”)
Companies
Université Paris-Saclay is taking part in a number of events designed to promote the careers of mathematics graduates in the private sector.
- Forum Entreprises et Mathématique: a great opportunity to meet a large number of start-ups, companies, large groups and SMEs, and to take part in round-table discussions.
- PhD talent Career Fair: a job fair for PhDs organized by PhDTalent
Job opportunities
For job vacancies in companies and start-ups, we particularly recommend consulting the Agence pour les mathématiques en interaction avec l'entreprise et la société (AMIES) job vacancies website.
Teaching
Doctoral students who are also agrégés, and who wish to take up a teaching post in a lycée, must participate in the intra-academic movement of the Versailles academy (or the academy to which the establishment where you are carrying out your teaching/monitoring assignment is attached) and the inter-academic movement for a first request for an assignment. It is also possible to request a further postponement of your training period, to carry out an ATER, a post-doc, etc.
The procedure begins in November of the third year of the thesis:
- See the information in the Bulletin Officiel de l'Education Nationale, in particular the special issue published at that time, which explains the procedure to follow (which may change from year to year).
- Obtain your NUMEN. If you don't have it, call the Rectorat de Versailles 01 30 83 44 44.
- Connect to the SIAM website and follow the procedure.
Qualification of university professorship & MCF
In order to apply for a professorship in the universities of France in the spring of year n, it is necessary to be on a list of qualifications drawn up by the Conseil National des Universités. The application for the qualification must take place no later than the autumn of year n-1.
For all candidates, the timetable for the 2026 campaign will be based on a single phase for registration and submission of documents (compulsory and additional), starting in mid-September 2025 and ending on December 15, 2025 (no derogation possible, whatever the date of defense). Applications are made via the Odyssée application.
The procedure and timetable are detailed on the Galaxie website.
Information specific to CNU sections 25 (fundamental mathematics) and 26 (applied mathematics), as well as advice and regulatory texts, is available on the Opération postes website.
